“We don’t know why the baby was there, and when the airport medical team arrived they tried to revive it, but were not able to. The Civil Guard then came to take statements from the parents, and the matter is now in their hands,” an airport official said following the incident on Wednesday night.
The accident happened at about midnight after the family had arrived on a flight from Gatwick airport to Alicante, a popular destination for holidaymakers on Spain’s Mediterranean Costa Blanca.
A spokesman for the Spanish Civil Guard confirmed they were investigating the death and that it was “apparently related to the carousel”, but said it was too early to give further details.
The parents’ nationalities were not immediately known, although diplomatic sources said the father was Canadian.
