Police: 1 Person Dies After Struggle With Officers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say a person whom officers were trying to take into custody has died after a brief struggle with police.

News outlets report Fort Lauderdale police officers working at an event at Carter Park were alerted to a person who was exhibiting abnormal behavior about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police spokeswoman police spokeswoman Casey Liening says police later found the individual in the middle of traffic. Liening says officers tried to take the person into custody.

Authorities say the person resisted and a brief struggle ensued. The person was taken to the hospital and pronounced deal.

The Fort Lauderdale police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating.

Florida Deputy OK After Gunman Fires Shots At Unmarked Truck

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A gunman opened fire on a Florida sheriff’s deputy who was following him in an unmarked vehicle.

The shooting happened early Monday as the Orange County Sheriff’s deputy was following a suspicious car near Orlando. Sheriff’s spokesman Jeff Williamson said in a news release that someone in the Honda Accord rolled down the window and fired “multiple” rounds at the deputy, who didn’t return fire.

The deputy wasn’t injured.

Williamson says the vehicle sped away with marked sheriff’s vehicles in pursuit. Four male suspects bailed out of the car near an elementary school. One person was caught immediately and a second was arrested a short time later.

An investigation continues.

Florida Man Dies In Apartment Fire

OCALA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has died in a fire at a two-story home that contains six apartments.

The Ocala StarBanner reports fire broke out Sunday afternoon. When firefighters entered the home, they found the man lying on the floor. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

No one else was injured in the fire, which was contained to the man’s apartment, which was on the first floor.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.

The American Red Cross assisted 10 residents who were displaced by the fire.

Lost High School Ring ‘Keeps Coming Back’ To Florida Woman

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman says her high school ring “keeps coming back to me.”

Shannon Rose Forester who lives near Pensacola lost the class ring while stationed at the Navy Reserve Center in Hancock, Wisconsin.

A Wisconsin woman turned to Facebook when she found the 1979 Pace High School ring that didn’t belong to anyone in her family while cleaning her father’s house in Custer after his death.

Nicki Hintz’ search led her to Forester.

Hintz tells the Pensacola News Journal she believes her dad found the ring when he moved into the house and put it in a drawer.

It’s not the first time Forester lost the ring. It was misplaced during a car wreck shortly after she graduated high school. Her father, a sheriff’s deputy, found it at a pawn shop.

Authorities: 5 Injured As Driver Hits Disney World Bus

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say five people were injured after a man ran a red light and collided with a Disney World bus.

The Orlando Sentinel reports 34-year-old Ritesh Bhagani crashed into the bus Sunday around 6:30 p.m.

Sgt. Kim Montes with the Florida Highway Patrol says Bhagani slammed into the front of the Disney World bus with 19 passengers inside.

Authorities say the bus driver was hospitalized with serious injuries. Two other people on the bus, along with Bhagani and his passenger, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities say charges are pending. It’s unclear if Bhagani has a lawyer.
