Alligator Bites Man Several Times At Florida Retention Pond

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida was bitten several times by an alligator at a retention pond.

News outlets report Frederic Iman was attacked Monday morning.

Charlotte County Fire and EMS said in a news release that emergency crews responded about 10:20 a.m. after a man suffered serious injuries from the bites. Iman was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital and is listed in fair condition.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating. Further details have not been released.

Florida Teen Jumps Into Murky Canal, Pulls Man To Safety

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — When a 19-year-old auto parts employee heard screams coming from a nearby canal, he stripped to his boxers, jumped into the water and pulled a 56-year-old man to safety.

Nic Berry tells The Daytona Beach News-Journal that he gave the man a bag of chips, a bottle of water and a ride home last Wednesday in New Smyrna Beach. The man told Barry he fell into the water while walking home from a hospital where his wife had been admitted.

The man refused medical help.

Berry’s mother, Melody Moses, says she’s proud that her son did something “that not a lot of people would’ve done in a lifetime.”

On July 9, three Florida teens stood on a bank and watched a man drown while recording the scene and mocking him.

Woman Killed After Being Struck By Brightline Train

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a woman was struck and killed by a Brightline train in Florida.

The Palm Beach Post reports the woman was hit Monday as the train traveled through Boca Raton on the Florida East Coast Railway tracks.

Boca Raton police spokeswoman Jessica Desir says the death is being investigated as an apparent suicide. Desir says she didn’t know which direction the train was traveling when it struck the woman. The woman’s identity hasn’t been released.

Brightline said in a statement that the company is working with authorities as they investigate the death.

Brightline is set to launch service between West Palm Beach and Miami later this summer. In preparation for the start of its service, the company has been testing its trains along the FEC line.

Orlando Supermarket Market Heats Up

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The market for supermarkets is heating up in Orlando, Florida.

Lucky’s Market said Monday that it will open up eight stores in the Orlando area next year.

The Colorado-based grocer specializes in organic and gluten-free foods. The stores typically have a cafe area and juice bars.

Orlando’s supermarket market has been heating up in the past several years with the addition of the Trader Joe’s chain and the planned building of a Sprouts Farmers Market store.

At the same time, Winn-Dixie, which has been in the Florida market for decades, has been closing stores as it faces stiffer competition.

Man Charged Will Killing Alligator, Trying To Sell Meat

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has been charged with killing an alligator and trying to sell its meat.

Local news outlets report that 33-year-old Shaun Edward Sparks was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of possessing and killing an alligator.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says residents in a Lakeland neighborhood called authorities Sunday afternoon, saying Sparks was trying to sell them an alligator tail. A licensed trapper responded and found the seven-foot alligator’s carcass. The animal had been stabbed multiple times.

After his arrest, Sparks told officers he had taken to meat home to show his girlfriend, 27-year-old Christy Michelle Vincent. She was also arrested and charged with a single count of possessing an alligator.

Jail records didn’t list attorneys for Sparks or Vincent.
