COURSE OVERVIEW:
Each episode is a conversation between Professor Roy McCraw Jr. and Professor Jody Tompson that covers the topic of the day. The conversations are full of interesting examples, experiences, and reflections on excellent leadership competencies. The conversations also cover academic theories on leadership to give listeners some exposure to all the research that has been conducted on leadership.
Episode One: Introduction to Leadership Lessons

In our first conversation Jody and Roy introduce Leadership Lessons, a course on Management and Leadership. This course is perfect for anyone that has an interest in learning the principles of management and leadership including emerging leaders and even seasoned leaders that want to enhance their management and leadership skills. The course is designed to be presented in 12 hour long “classes.”
Episode One objectives:
1. Know and apply the basic concepts, theories, terms, and facts related to management principles and business leadership.
2. Incorporate the concepts of ethics, social responsibility, diversity, integrity, teamwork, effective communication and fairness in management and leadership decisions.
3. Apply the elements of planning, organizing, leadership, and control in business management.
4. Know the relationship of management to leadership and leadership to management.
Episode Two: Are Leaders Born?

In Episode #2, Roy and Jody spend a full hour discussing leadership. The episode presents the behaviors and characteristics of excellent leaders and some examples of people who demonstrate excellent leadership. Other topics in the episode are the five sources of power that every leader can try to use to influence organizations. Finally, you will learn about different leadership styles and some of the modern theories of leadership that are taught in leadership courses today.”

Episode Three: What It Takes To Be a Leader

In Episode #3, Roy and Jody continue their discussion of leadership. They provide great examples of good and bad leadership, and they have an in depth conversation about “what it takes to be a leader.”

Episode Four: Ethics and Social Responsibility

In Episode #4, Roy and Jody tie ethics to leadership, with the premise that there is no sustained leadership without trust, and there is no trust without integrity. Unless leaders implement the principles of “sustainable capitalism,” capitalism can be exploitive of people and depletive of natural resources.
Ethical leadership considers the needs of all stakeholders.
Corporate social responsibility examines the importance of the “triple bottom line”: economic gain, social responsibility, and environmental protection.
Episode Four Objectives:
1. To define ethics and consider how it relates to executive leadership.
2. To challenge leaders to get in touch with their personal core values.
3. To have leaders and managers know that they can do “well” by doing “good.”
4. To encourage leaders to focus on long-term, rather than short-term gains.
Episode 5: Planning: a Critical Part of Leadership

In Episode #5, Roy and Jody discuss how leaders can become more effective at planning in their organizations. They discuss the benefits and importance of good planning, and also a few of the typical criticisms of planning. They also cover the practical steps of how to create a plan, including some ideas for how to set goals and how to use management by objective (MBO).

Episode 6: How Great Leaders Act as Great Motivators

This is the first of two episodes where Roy and Jody discuss how leaders can focus on motivating employees. People have different triggers to be motivated, and leaders can create an environment where all employees can find reason to excel in their jobs. This episode covers the reason leaders must be good motivators, principles of goal setting, and some basic theories of human motivation.

Episode 7: Leaders Know that Motivation is “Not Just About the Money”

It’s “not just about the money.” Leaders know that employees, especially those engaged in tasks requiring cognitive skills and creativity, are more motivated by intrinsic forces…autonomy, mastery, and purpose.

In this episode, Roy and Jody discuss why the functions of Human Resource Management (HRM) are more important than ever. Excellent leaders know that building a talented labor force is the most important reason why organizations are successful. HRM is composed of recruiting prospective employees, then interviewing, hiring, training, compensating, and developing them. We discuss these functions to help our audience understand some of details about creating a productive and engaged workforce. Special emphasis is given to the concept of employee engagement.

Episode 9: Leadership and Cross-Cultural Management

Roy and Jody discuss how globalization influences the role of leadership in the modern economy. Even small companies that never import or export any products will see growing pressure from international markets. What do effective leaders do in response to globalization? Employees’ national culture plays a significant role in their values, beliefs, and behaviors. Excellent leaders must recognize multiple cultures and how to create organizations that thrive with many cultural values. We discuss the characteristics of national culture and how those characteristics influence behavior.

Episode 10: Managing Innovation and Change-Leaders know that if their organizations are not improving they are likely going backwards

One of the fundamental success drivers that deliver a competitive advantage include innovation. The speed of change is accelerating because innovation stimulates improvement and change. “The more we innovate, the more we innovate”.

Episode 12: The Importance of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

In this, the final “class” in this season of Leadership Lessons, Roy and Jody introduce the vitally important subject of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership. After a brief review of the topics of the prior 11 episodes Professor McCraw and Professor Tompson dive into the sometimes misunderstood and often misapplied fundamentals of emotional intelligence. They discuss why high EQ, emotional intelligence, can be even more important in leadership than high IQ. They believe that regardless of how smart you are, unless you are aware of your own emotions and their impact on those influenced by you, have self control, and have empathy for the needs of others you will not reach your full potential as a leader.
Episode 12 Objectives
1. Define and discuss the meaning of emotional intelligence and contrast it to IQ.
2. Discuss self-awareness, self-control, and Empathy as it applies to leadership.
3. Review the art and science of finding rapport with others, matching and pacing, and being a positive influence.
4. Challenge listeners to realize that developing leadership skills is a life-long journey, and that you can strengthen your leadership skills with focused effort.
ABOUT YOUR PROFESSORS:
Roy McCraw is an adjunct professor of leadership and ethics for the Walker College of Business graduate school at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. For almost 40 years Roy was a senior executive in the financial services industry retiring from Wachovia Bank in 2008 as Regional Chairman and President. In 2009 he was appointed Executive in Residence at The University of Tampa where he taught in the Sykes College of Business for six semesters. Roy received his BS degree in Business Administration from Western Carolina University and his MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
George H. (Jody) Tompson is a Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship in the Sykes College of Business at the University of Tampa. He earned a PhD in strategic management from the University of South Carolina in 1995. Before coming to UT in July of 2000, he lived and worked in New Zealand for four years. At UT, he teaches courses in entrepreneurship and strategic management to both undergraduates and MBAs.
