TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ A trial to decide the fate of Florida’s 27 congressional districts is underway in a Tallahassee courtroom.
The trial started Thursday and could last until next week. Judge Terry Lewis has seven different maps to consider. The Florida Supreme Court wants Lewis to pick a map and send it to the court for final approval.
Lewis said he would likely rule in October.
The Supreme Court threw out the state’s current congressional districts in July. But the House and Senate deadlocked in August over how to redraw the districts.
The House and Senate have presented rival maps to Lewis. The groups that sued the Legislature have presented alternative proposals.
One main difference between the various proposals is to how to divide two congressional districts in South Florida.
