The Washington Post reported Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus spent about 45 minutes on the phone with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday.
“Priebus’s decision to reach out to Trump came after days of talks with Republican donors and officials about how best to manage Trump’s outsize presence on the airwaves. Many financiers who are influential at the RNC have been fuming about Trump’s ascent and told Priebus that he must ensure that the RNC’s efforts over the past year to win more of the Hispanic vote is not harmed.”
Trump issued a Tweet saying the call lasted only 10 minutes.
Priebus asked Trump to tone down his remarks about illegal immigration several times during the call. The RNC chair said courting the Hispanic voting block is a core mission and Trump’s comments were not winning them any supporters.
Sean Spricer, Chief Strategist for the RNC, told Breitbart.com: “Chairman Priebus often speaks privately with candidates seeking our party’s nomination. He did have a very respectful conversation with Mr. Trump on Wednesday. They discussed multiple comments, including comments on illegal immigration.”
The phone based “sit down” took place after several big-money GOP donors appealed the party to tone down their rhetoric on immigration and comments toward other GOP candidates.
Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s campaign manager told Breitbart.com: “There’s no question in my mind that Mr. Trump’s fortitude on [immigration] will be unshaken, whether it’s a phone call from Reince Priebus or whether it’s [a business cutting its ties.]”
To recap: Trump blasted both Democrats, Republicans and the President for their current policies regarding illegal immigrants currently based in the country, the on-going treatment of the southern border, the failure to follow current immigration law and the influx of crime and previously-eradicated disases. Trump’s comments drew condemnation from a variety of media outlets and corporations.
Trump’s campaign is gaining steam. He’s currently the leader in North Carolina and ranks No. 2 in Iowa and New Hampshire. The New York-based billionaire appeals to a GOP base smarting from a 2014 tidal wave election victory that resulted in the party breaking all its campaign promises within weeks of the election.
