FL Abortion Wait Law Goes On Trial

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida’s First District Court of Appeal is set to hear a case challenging a state law requiring a woman seeking an abortion to wait at least 24 hours after visiting a clinic to get care.

A state court barred enforcement of the law June 30, a day before it was set to go into effect.

Tuesday’s hearing is the state’s appeal.

The ACLU filed a lawsuit last June on behalf of a Gainesville-based reproductive health care provider and Medical Students for Choice.

Gov. Rick Scott signed the Informed Patient Consent bill into law after it passed the Senate and House last year.

The law allows a physician to perform an abortion in less than 24 hours if the woman is a victim of rape, incest, domestic violence or human trafficking.
