SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer shot and wounded a suicidal man who charged at officers with a knife.
South Daytona police Lt. Mark Cheatham tells news outlets that 31-year-old Chad Murray was shot once in the incident that occurred Saturday.
Police were called by Murray’s ex-girlfriend who reported he was threatening to commit suicide by overdosing on medication because his relationship with her fell apart.
When officers arrived, the girlfriend let them in and Murray immediately confronted the officers and charged at them.
An officer deployed his stun gun, which didn’t stop him, and another officer fired his weapon. Even after Murray was shot, officers had to wrestle him to the ground.
Police charged Murray with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
