Big Cypress National Preserve Wildfires Rage

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) _ The Mud Lake Wildfire Complex in Big Cypress National Preserves is remains 15 percent contained as of Tuesday morning.

A statement released Tuesday by the Everglades National Park Service says the wildfires, which lie thirty miles east of Naples, were caused naturally by lightning from storms that passed through the area during the weekend.

Fire, air and ground personnel are working to suppress the six wildfires to make sure firefighters and the public remain safe.

Rain is forecast to move through the fire area Tuesday afternoon. Officials hope that may help suppress the fires.

High temperatures and gusty winds, though, are expected to increase fire activity, possibly making it difficult to control.

All areas of Big Cypress Preserve remain open at this time.
