The parrothead primary is over as iconic singer Jimmy Buffett endorsed former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, D-Fla., for governor on Monday. With two weeks to go, Graham is the favorite to win the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
Buffett, who is active on environmental issues in the Sunshine State, praised Graham and compared her to her father, former Gov. and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla.
“Like her dad, Gwen will put the interests of everyday Floridians first,” Buffett said. “She has a heart for people and a passion for the Sunshine State. She’ll protect our precious natural environment, ensure we have strong public schools and affordable health care.
“It’s been too long since we have had a governor for all the people,” Buffett added. “For that reason, I am supporting my friend, Democrat Gwen Graham, for governor and I encourage ya’ll to do the same.”
This isn’t the first time that Graham relied on Buffett’s support. Back in October 2014, Buffett hit the campaign trail to help Graham when she successfully challenged then U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland, R-Fla.
The Graham campaign announced that Buffett will perform at a rally in South Florida for their candidate on August 23, only a few days before the primary on August 28.
“Jimmy isn’t just a legendary musician, he is also a dedicated environmentalist who has worked with my family for years to preserve Florida’s natural treasures,” Graham said before referencing one of Buffett’s classic songs. “I am proud to have earned his vote on election day – come that Tuesday, it’ll be alright.”
Polls shows Graham leading the Democratic primary field with former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and billionaire Jeff Greene battling for second. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and businessman Chris King are also running for the Democratic nomination.
