So What Were The Best Tweets This Year?

A Rewind Of This Past Year’s Top Tweets

Earlier this month Twitter released the top-trending topics and top tweets of 2016. As expected Hollywood ad Politics topped those lists to be the buzz on social media.

Many probably expected president-elect Donald Trump, who was very vocal on Twitter during his campaign, to have one of the top tweets of 2016, but in fact the top tweet came from a Spanish gamer called elrubius. On August 22nd the gamer tweeted just one simple word: “limonada.”

Limonada is Spanish for lemonade. The gamer supposedly offered prizes for anyone who retweeted him, said The Week.

The second most popular tweet of 2016 came out of Hollywood as Harry Styles from One Direction used one of his ex-girlfriend’s lyrics to celebrate his birthday.

The third most popular tweet of 2016 came from Hillary Clinton. In the midst of her presidential defeat, the Democratic presidential nominee reached out to young girls to encourage them to recognize their potential.

But it wasn’t all Hollywood and politics topping the lists for Twitter. Let’s not forget that 2016 was home to the Rio Summer Olympic Games, which came in at No. 1 for the top-trending topics overall on Twitter.

The 2016 U.S. election came in second for top-trending, while HBO’s Game of Thrones, which registered as the top TV show of the year, was No. 10 on the top-trending list.

While #GameofThrones was the top TV show, Star Wars captured the No. 1 spot in the movie category. Disney/Lucasfilm’s production capitalized on the late-2015 release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and this months Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

But before we post the lists below, let’s remember Leonardo DiCaprio winning his first Academy Award.

His tweet was the biggest entertainment retweet for 2016 and set a record for most retweets per minute of any Oscars.
