Tampa Bay Celebrates MLK Day

It was a busy weekend of celebrating and honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but today its all about the parades.

In St. Pete, The 27th St. Petersburg’s Drum Major for Justice parade kicks off at 11 a.m. at Third Avenue S and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, north to Central Avenue, east to Bayshore Drive NE and north to Fifth Avenue NE, disbanding at Vinoy Park.

Then in Tampa, the 22nd annual MLK parade begins at noon at 15th Street and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and ends at Middleton High.

But if you can’t make the parades, there are other MLK events going on.  In Plant City there is the Plant City Freedom Walk – where you can join others in a walk around an 11-acre lake while listening to his audio speeches and jazz music, 10 a.m. to noon at Samuel W. Cooper Park, 900 E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Plant City; and the African-American Club of Pasco event honors Martin Luther King Jr. with a march from Union Missionary Baptist Church in Port Richey and will end at the African-American Club.  It gets started at 10:30 a.m. and will feature speakers, entertainment and refreshments.
